The effectiveness of hypnosis for stress and anxiety management is a perfect example of the mind-body connection to positive health.  Stress is a normal and natural physical response when you perceive a threat.  So, the stress response when you are under true threat is a good thing as it helps your body get ready to either fight or flee in order to stay safe.  Stress can also stimulate and increase your energy levels, helping to optimize performance in demanding situations.  However, you may often perceive threats that are greatly exaggerated or even non-existent.  Stress is also often produced when you feel that you are not in control of a situation that you regard as important to you in some way.  And when you allow stress to take control in an unhealthy way under inappropriate circumstances it becomes abusive to your health.  Fortunately, you can take back the sense of control with hypnosis!

Chronic stress is rightly a big concern among healthcare professionals, because the negative emotional and physical health effects of chronic stress can be very serious.  Prolonged exposure to stress puts you at increased risk of many health problems, including:

  • Heart disease

  • Digestive problems
  • Back pain and other muscle pain
  • Anxiety, Depression & Moodiness
  • Memory loss and concentration difficulties

 

Stress and premature aging have been shown to be related.  When under stress for long periods of time, your body reacts negatively.  Your immune system can be degraded, your DNA can sustain damage, and even your brain function can be impaired. Studies have even shown that chronic stress can contribute to your developing Alzheimer’s disease.  Further, you tend to not take care of yourself in other ways during periods of stress.  For instance, you’re less likely to be physically and mentally active or eat well-balanced meals when experiencing chronic stress.

Stress and weight gain have also been shown to be significantly related. When under chronic stress, your endocrine system can malfunction.  In particular, your adrenal glands can produce high levels of cortisol which in turn can cause you to crave simple carbohydrates.  And, due to their calorie density and how your body processes them, simple carbs can be your worst enemy in the battle for a healthy weight.  These types of foods have been shown to be the biggest contributor to unhealthy weight gain.

Your reaction to your perceptions of a situation is what causes undue and uncontrolled stress.  How stress can take control of your life and damage your health is a perfect example of the mind-body health connection:

Your emotions drive the physical response to stress. And that physical response, if overused, can have many negative health effects.  So, obviously taking control of your stress is essential.  Fortunately, hypnosis is very well-suited to that task.
